Factors That Contribute to Feeling Connected in Social Media
A Everyone wants to feel connected to something; whether it is a group or organization, there is always a want to feel connected. Social media is structured around building connections. They are forming relationships with friends, family, professional and social groups. The factors of connection through social media can create social or professional associations in ways that may seem complicated or as simple as not having enough time. With the convivence of a substantial percentage of people have access to smart deceives and their perks. For example, a social media group specializing in information for pregnant women and children will target pregnant women and parents, sharing such information as shared experiences, tricks to help from previous experience, and even sales to benefit the targeted group.
The Concept of Homophily and Its Results from Social Media
Homophily is the feeling of admiration for the same thing. For instance, a group focused on space and current events. People that belong in this group have a similar interest in space. People who belong to the same group have the same or similar beliefs, so they are usually supportive of one another. This form of support can lead to empowerment, especially for someone who experiences social challenges. For example, someone that experiences social anxieties or is considered, an introvert will benefit from this because it allows them to express themselves or form relationships comfortably. Maximizing social capital and self-esteem improvements are satisfying reasons people rely on social media. ltuwairiqi et al. (2019)
The Contribution of Platforms Algorithms to the Development of Homophily
I am a witness that algorithms exist. Have you ever searched for something on your smart device, and then later, when exploring your social media, you see the same item or something very similar to catch your eye while you are scrolling? No social media is not reading your mind, but it saves your views, likes, and dislikes. Algorithms contribute to homophily by eternal networking, working to connect the appropriate group.
